Samurai Shodown and Art of Fighting are significantly different on both platforms with one having full size sprites on one and shrunk sprites on the other. Good one! I had no idea that the SNES version played like that! I'm eager to check it out. The SNES version is exclusive to that console-I believe the Genesis version is the same as the Amiga version, which was ported and downgraded over to the NES and SMS. Both are essentially run and gunners, but the Genesis version is more like an Arcade-action game while the SNES version has more of a Metroid-like game pace and play mechanics. I am morbidly curious about the SNES WWF Arcade though. (OTOH, Sega and Konami did not run a joint ad for Batman Returns, or anything like that). It's very likely that Acclaim advertised both Scooby Doo games with the same one-page ad in EGM without ever mentioning the fact that the two are completely different. Again, I'm looking more for games that were essentially sold as being the same product by the same company without that actually being the case. WWF Arcade (Awesome game on the Genesis, steaming pile of shit on the SNES p)Ĭompletely different publishers/design teams on the first two, so they don't count. Shadowrun (Both are adventure games with strong RPG elements, but different stories and gameplay) Some other games that fit into this category are:īatman Returns (Platformer on the Genesis, beat-em-up on the SNES) Scooby on the SNES is dirt-cheap, but on the Genesis I don't think I've ever seen a loose cart for under $15. I'm guessing that this might also explain the massive difference in used market prices. It is reminiscent of Maniac Mansion on the NES. There are very few games in that genre on the Genesis. I have them both, and they both have their merits, but the Genesis point-and-click mystery adventure is a lot of fun. Slight thread derailment, as I feared, but 108 Stars and a couple of others have the right idea. And of course I don't want to turn this into a console wars thread (it doesn't really matter in this context if MK2 looked better on one platform they're still, fundamentally, the same game).

Pirates of Darkwater: Again, never played either one, but I've heard that they're not the same game at all.Īlso, I'm really only interested in compiling a list of games with the same titles published/marketed by the same company (ex: Jurassic Park SNES/Genesis are obviously different since they came from separate publishers who both had the film license for the respective platforms). Scooby Doo Mystery: I've never played either version, but my understanding is that the SNES game is a platformer, while the Genesis one is a point and click adventure. Sunset Riders: The SNES version was a straight arcade port, while the Genesis version played very differently IMO. Sparkster: While the Genesis and SNES games definitely shared some assets (music, etc.), they're really two completely different Rocket Knight games.

SNES threads.Īnyway, like the topic says, name some games that came out under the same name on both platforms, but were not really the same game at all. SNES generally had better platformers and RPGs.Apologies if this has been done before, but I didn't really have the patience to wade through dozens of Genesis vs. Genesis generally had better shooters and sports games. But from a slightly less biased point of view, I can make the following generalizations: If you let the Sega and Nintendo fanboys duke it out, it all turns into "all X ports are shitty". In other cases, both versions are good, but are such completely different games, that it is worth owning both, not just one or the other. What threw a wrench in the gear was discovering that some ports of the same game are actually completely differnt games! In some cases one is better than the other, and you might have missed out on the superior SNES version, having though owning the Genesis version was sufficient (or vice versa). The main inspiration for creating/finding these lists was because I already knew that a lot of games were ported to multiple platforms, and there is always the question of which port should you get.Īs a Sega fan, of course I give the edge to the Sega system, all other things being equal. I did additional research to fill in some missing info and add some additional lists. These lists are based on original lists by user SonicMegaDrive on.
